Obituary for Edward Gerald Jordan

JORDAN, EDWARD G. “Ed”
Of Kalamazoo, MI
Passed away at home on August 11, 2016. Ed was born June 12, 1929 in North Conway, New Hampshire, the son of Raymond and Eleanor (Masterton) Jordan. He graduated from Kennett High School in 1947 where he played 4 years on the varsity baseball team as a pitcher, 1st baseman and outfielder. He was scouted in his senior year and played ball for the Pittsburg Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Senators from 1947-1950. On September 9, 1950 he married the love of his life, Marcia (Cronkite) Jordan. They enjoyed 56 wonderful years together until Marcia’s passing on July 15, 2006. Ed was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and after 16 weeks of basic training, he served in Japan and was sent to Korea to fight in the Korean War. He attained the rank of Corporal and worked in the mortar squad and as a senior wireman in communications until his honorable discharge in 1954. After serving his country, he went to work for the Public Service Co. in Huntington, Indiana as an apprentice lineman. In 1956, Ed went to work for Michigan Bell in Kalamazoo, MI as a lineman. He retired in 1988 after 32 years of service to the phone company. Ed and Marcia owned a cabin in Marion, MI where they enjoyed 22 relaxing years whenever they could escape throughout the year. They especially loved to tromp through the woods in the spring to search for the elusive morel mushrooms. After retirement, they wintered in Gulf Shores, AL. until Marcia’s passing. Ed and Marcia were blessed with many good friends throughout their life and they enjoyed “hanging out” with them. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Marcia, his parents, two brothers, Bill and Frank Jordan and sister, Dorothy Cobb. Surviving family members include his daughter, June Driscoll of Grand Rapids, MI, a beloved grandson, Tim (Sara) Holden of Kalamazoo, nephews, Ed Cobb of Massachusetts, Bobby Jordan of Maine, Todd King of Livonia, MI and Scott King of Palm City, Florida. Also left to grieve his passing are special neighbors, Dale and Cheryl Westbrook and long-time friend of 80 years, George Fuller of New Hampshire. Per Ed’s wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be laid to rest beside his loving wife in the Fort Custer National Cemetery on August 19 with military honors.
