Obituary for James Harvey Coss

Coss, James Harvey James H. Coss, 93, of Kalamazoo passed on March 18th. Born February 18, 1924 in Detroit, son of Eva (Anderson) and Harvey Coss. A former administrative law judge, "Jim" retired and relocated from Detroit to Portage with wife Margaret in 1990. A patriot, Jim served as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps in the Western Pacific (Philippines) during World War II. He was a maker, always building things with his hands. As a child he processed his own movie film, as a young man he invented the "Jim Jam", a patented tool used to check electrical current. He attended the University of Detroit on the GI bill and obtained his law degree from the Detroit College of Law. His court decisions were rarely overturned on appeal and studied by law students at the University of Michigan. He is survived by wife Margaret (Kesler) Coss and three children, daughters Sue Coss (Jerry Fry Kalamazoo) and Mary Coss (Darrell Westlake Seattle, WA), and one son, James Charles (Kathleen Olmsted Kalamazoo). Jim had seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family will hold a service at Fort Custer in June, where a plaque will be dedicated in his name. If desired, contributions can be made to the or Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.
