Clement, M. Jayne 7/8/1924 - 7/28/2017 Kalamazoo, Michigan Mrs. Margaret Jayne (nee Morrison) Clement, 93, of Kalamazoo, Michigan died at Friendship Village, Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 28, 2017 after a short illness. Jayne was born in London, England in 1924 of Canadian parents John Alma Bell Morrison and Therese Georgina nee MacGregor Morrison. She was educated as a young girl in Wembley Park, England, arriving with her parents in Canada in 1930 designated as a British subject under the British Quota, and settling in Fergus, Ontario. She loved her years at Camp Tanamakoon in Ontario. Mrs. Clement served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943, in Victoria, British Columbia until 1945, after which she graduated from the University of Toronto in 1948 with a Bachelor of Physical Health Education. She later studied small business management at Kalamazoo College in the 1970s. She was married in June, 1949 to Dr. Frederick Locke Clement in Fergus, Ontario, until 1988 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Jayne Clement became a resident alien of the United States under the British quota in 1948, and received her Canadian citizenship papers in 1972. Mrs. Clement was a Phys. Ed. Teacher at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. She had several home businesses while raising her family, including Fiddle Hats (1964-1970) and Chart Works, Ltd. (1983-2008). She taught needle arts classes in both Canada and the United States. From 1975 to 1983, Jayne was co-owner of the Old Post Yarn Works in Saugatuck, Michigan with Christie Rosenbaum. Jayne was very active in civic and volunteer groups throughout her life. In Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mrs. Clement contributed to many clubs and organizations including the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity (1946 life, including President in 1984 and President of the Kalamazoo KKG Alumnae in 1970); the Kalamazoo Auxiliary Academy of Medicine (1956 1988, President 1972); Kalamazoo Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America (President 1975); Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (1965 2008); and the KIA Docent Council (Secretary 1988-1991, President 1992). At the time of her death, she was active in leadership activities at Friendship Village, Kalamazoo, Michigan and contributed frequently to the establishment and care of the Village Woods. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo from 1956 to the time of her death. Jayne Clement had a lifetime appreciation of the arts, primarily in oil painting. She is survived by her four children: David Morrison Clement (Betsy Weiss) of Winthrop, Washington; Margaret (Peg) Locke Clement of Burlington, Vermont; James Frederick Clement (Barbara Schneider) of Winthrop, Washington; and Susan Clement Wilson (Charlie) of Woodinville, Washington. She leaves one sister, Elizabeth Morrison Templin, of Kitchener, Ontario, and four grandchildren: Rachel Weiss Clement, Timothy Weiss Clement, Stephanie Elisabeth Clement, and Sarah Jane Clement. She leaves two great-grandchildren: Fredric Theodore Jackson and Vivian Moore Jackson of Seattle, Washington, with one more due in August 2017. Her sister Frances Morrison Jones and her brother John MacGregor Morrison predeceased her in 2003 and 2011 respectively. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Friendship Village Woods Fund, 1400 Drake Road, Kalamazoo, MI, 49006. Cremations arrangements are being managed by Avink Funeral Home Cremation Society of Schoolcraft, Michigan. The family will hold a celebration of life service at Friendship Village at 2 pm, August 1, 2017. A graveside service in Canada will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, Ontario, Canada.
