memories

So many handballs hit at Reid Field house, starting at four o'clock Tuesdays and Thursdays.

After Reid we went to a racket club on South Westnedge, then to the Markin Center at Kalamzoo College.

Finally there came a time when Dick reluctantly decided he couldn't give to the game what he had given to it and us over the years.

What he gave to us was fierce yet friendly competition, knowing it was just a group of guys taking a break from life.

For me the game was fun and challenging, including our "rivalry" both as combatents and partners.

Prior to Christmas and in June we would retreat to a restaurant for conversation, laughs, and beer.

Like my dad in his younger days Dick had a strong sense of play. As an opponent I felt Dick's sense of competition and joy.

I'm left wth years of memories of a wonderful competitor and human being.
