Obituary for John Thorn Conner

CONNER, JOHN 5/1/1935 - 4/4/2018 Portage, MI John Thorn Conner passed away peacefully at home with his beloved family at his bedside. John was born in Philadelphia, PA to Walter Thorn Conner and Margaret Judson Conner. His family relocated to Grosse Pointe, MI and John graduated from Grosse Pointe High in 1952. While attending WMU, John met Sally Jean Metry and they married in 1961, making their home in Portage, MI. John worked as a Sales Engineer in the Mining Industry, retiring in 1997. Additionally he served in the US Army Reserve for six years. John's life is continued by his wife, Sally, children Elizabeth Hammond (Steve), David Conner (Amy) and Stephanie Wagner(Troy). He is commemorated by 8 loving grandchildren, Jonathon, Carly and Brooke Hammond. Makenzie, Logan and Noah Conner. Samantha and Allie Wagner. He is remembered as a loving brother to his sister Ann. His nieces Jennifer (Joe), Kelly (Keven), Wendy (Joe) and Michelle, nephew Mark (Kelly), cousin Cy Judson (Janet) and their families. John's loving marriage of 57 years was filled with strength and gratitude. His favorite past time was golfing in Portage and while vacationing in Orange Beach, AL. Sally and John enjoyed many years of travel within the USA and Abroad. He faithfully supported the Detroit Tigers, WMU Broncos and the PGA. John had a fond admiration for classical music and the arts. He was a generous, warm soul and had an incredible impact on the lives of his friends. He was also a guiding and inspiring force in shaping his family's lives. John was a true warrior while fighting Cancer for several years. His strength and courage was remarkable as he endured the final months. A 12:00 Mass will take place on May 5, 2018 at Saint Catherine Siena Catholic Church, 1150 Centre St., Portage, MI. Visitation at 10:30 and a luncheon will follow the Service. Donations may be made to the Kalamazoo Cancer Center, Kalamazoo Concert Band. Kalamazoo Symphony, or St. Catherine Siena Catholic Church.
