Obituary

Collins, Norman Joseph 10/24/1949 - 12/21/2018 Schoolcraft Norman Joseph Collins, 69, of Schoolcraft passed away December 21, 2018 after a heart attack. He was born October 24, 1949 in Kalamazoo, the son of Elmer and Genevieve (Skoglund) Collins. Surviving are his wife Tena Ross-Adams Collins, step-sons Nickolaus (Katarina), Timothy, Nathanyell (Kimberly) and Brandon and step-grandson Elliot Farrell. He was preceded in death by his brothers Woodrow Collins and Howard Collins, and sister Dyane (Collins) Wildig. Norm worked at Stryker for 46 years, one of the longest employees on record. He and Tena were regular supporters of Gospel Mission in Kalamazoo, enjoyed attending Earth, Wind and Fire concerts, and vacationed in Mexico every year. Norm liked hunting, playing cards, and garage saling. He was a U of M and Detroit fan. Norm was a generous person, frequently helping those in need and had a great sense of humor. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 and 5-7, and a service on Friday at 11:00 at Avink Funeral Home in Schoolcraft. Burial will be at Schoolcraft Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Gospel Mission in Kalamazoo. Please go to his webpage to leave a message for his family. www.avinkcremation.com

My husband Jack grew up in Kalamazoo in the same area as did his Collins cousins, who have all now passed away. As a child, he spent many hours with Chuck, Dyane, and Norman, and even Howard a few years later. Norman’s mother, Genevieve, was always very kind and generous, often giving of her nothing to whomever needed it; so what we read about Norman is reflective of his mom’s influence. In adulthood, the Skoglund family cousins did not remain close to one another, so we only saw Norman at some of the funerals. We just saw this obituary in the online paper tonight and were sad to receive this news. However sad this news, it was good to read so many nice comments about how Norman touched so many lives. We send our deepest condolences to you, Tena, and to all who loved him.
