Liggett

Sometimes I call her Jennifer Frances just to annoy her--since she wasn't all that fond of "Frances"-- but really, she is just Liggett to me. And to see her smiling face in an online obituary is surreal. To think I will never see that smile again in real life is heartbreaking.

I have known Liggett's hugs for thirty-eight years. I've known her laugh, her unadventurous food tastes, her love of show tunes, her handwriting. Her way of affirming what I just said, her "yes, yes, yes." She is part of a posse--a posse named after her--who sits around my dining room table and eats and reminisces (sometimes about stuff that happened twenty minutes before, sometimes twenty years before) and plays games and cackles. It is a priceless gathering and we all know how lucky we are. In just a couple weeks, we will gather again at our usual time and it will hit us hard. Her empty chair. We will all cry, I'm sure, but we will all laugh too. We have memories and stories and inside jokes and stick-figure drawings and know how very lucky we've been to have her in our lives.

Thank you, Liggett. I love you so.
